surfacing embedded structure

Save on tuals 0.1

Lets face it. Texts are not random collections of words. Every text is embedded with many levels of structure.

Authors work hard to follow rules for how to put words together properly. Syntax is not the whole story. The rules of grammar tell us how to put sentences together. The rules of logic structure assertions and arguments.

But a text works or fails based on how well it coheres. Coherence tell us how well sentences fit together. Does it make sense?

And authors that follow the rules to a 'T' bore us. Good authors play with the rules. They know how to bend them. And when to break them.

So our tuals dont 'structure unstructured data.' They just uncover as many layers of embedded structure as we can find.

intuitive text mining & content analysis

ScreenieWhile written texts are structured by logic and grammar, the way we use language everyday is far less formal. Colloquial or 'natural language' doesn't follow all the rules. Sometimes it even makes up its own.

The first step for tex.tuals is to figgure out how well a text conforms to the rules. And whose rules.

We do this by reading the text and breaking it up into chunks. Every word is assigned an appropriate Part of Speech by the Parts-of-Speech (POS) Tagger.

The next step is to run several types of analysis on the text, which draw upon the POS tagging to help disambiguate any portions of the text that could have multiple interpretations.

Then, tex.tuals has to give the reader the space and tuals to read the text and to notice things about it. To draw out connections that are especially important, and engage with the statements assertions, and assumptions of the author.
